[Basiwali - Polynesian World Music]
This group, "Basiwali" is a phrase from the Taiwanese indigenous tribe "Pangcah (Amis)" language that literally means "heading eastward". Basi- [verb] prefix moving towards. -wali [noun] suffix the direction of east. Basiwali is go ahead eastbound. Their style can be categorized as Polynesian World Music.
This is a group of two main musicians from two remote areas in the Polynesian landscape. Chalaw is from Taiwan's Amis tribe. Kilema is from Madagascar's Malkasi tribe. Polynesian is a subset of the Austronesian people.
Austronesians can be found from Australia to Hawaii, and many of their cultures are connected. Madagascar is the furthest west that these tribal cultures exist, and Taiwan is the furthest north. Taiwanese and Madagascan aboriginal tribes are deeply related, despite the great distance that separates their islands.
The Malkasi tribe in Madagascar and the Amis tribe in Taiwan are both Polynesians. Their ancient languages and cultures are surprisingly similar. The way Amis people in Taiwan count numbers is almost the same to the Malkasi people, all the way out in Madagascar. There are other similarities in these two related cultures, in their languages, crafts and music.
There are over 1200 Austronesian languages, which is about one third of the world's languages. These include languages used by some of the Taiwanese and Madagascan aboriginal tribes.
More than 20 languages have been identified as indigenous to Taiwan. According to research, these languages used by Taiwanese aborigines are filled with elements from ancient languages. In addition to the ten official aboriginal tribes in Taiwan, there were nineteen tribes on the island before mass immigration came to Taiwan in the Twentieth Century. Taiwanese aborigines played a major role in the development of Austronesian culture. Many scholars believe Taiwan may be the original home of all Austronesian culture - that aboriginal tribes now based around the world, from Australia to Hawaii, all probably originated in Taiwan.
